About the program
Clay & Camaraderie is our pottery program for active-duty service members, veterans, their families, and VHF volunteers. It combines structured creative expression with the calm, hands-on focus of working with clay.
- Hand-building workshopA 4-week beginner class on the basics of hand building with clay: slab building, texture, underglazes, and sgraffito, then glaze your pieces after they're fired in our kiln. Come unwind, learn something new, and connect with creativity.
- Open studioFor anyone who has taken a pottery session with us or has prior pottery experience. Come back to work on your own projects, with Sophia on hand to help with any questions.
- Seasonal workshopsSpecial projects like our two-part holiday ornament workshop, offered throughout the year. No pottery experience is necessary.

Meet the potter
Meet our resident potter
Sophia Lauterbach is the resident potter at Veterans Healing Farm and leads Clay & Camaraderie in the farm's pottery studio, where veterans, service members, their families, and volunteers learn to work with clay side by side.
Outside the farm, Sophia runs Dingbats Studio, her own ceramics studio in Asheville. She hand-builds custom pieces to order: house-number plaques, pet portrait vases, sculptures, and whimsical garden pieces like her mushroom pollinator cups.
